so. i hear you want to watch ultimate note?
the main character is wu xie (吴邪) and he’s a fuerdai and the only child in his generation in the WU family so he's very treasured by his two uncles: (er shu (wu erbai) and san shu (wu sanxing))
he studied architecture in uni and is skilled at understanding the tombs he's in; he’s very witty and a quick thinker. he’s known as a “disaster magnet”, and his main motto is that he doesn't trust "ghosts or gods," only science.
bc he's also, true to his name, naive and trusting, pang zi calls him “tian zhen” (from the term “天真无邪”/tian zhen wu xie (as it's similar to wx's name) which basically means innocent and naive). most other people call him “小三爷”/xiao san ye, which is his title in the WU family.
his family is a part of the 九门/the mystic nine/the 9 gates which pertained to the generation before wu xie. the nine gates basically controlled all the antique (so…tomb raiding) affairs in Changsha, so they’re all very wealthy and still have extremely high status. wu xie's grandfather (wu laogou) was a part of the nine, and wu xie’s “notebook” is a collection of his grandfathers tomb raiding notes (thus the title: 盗墓笔记/daomu biji which means grave robber’s notes!)
his ershu isn’t “involved” in tomb raiding affairs and didn’t want wu xie to get involved but his san shu was always passionate about tomb raiding and he was the one who really influenced wu xie as a child. thus, he’s really close with his san shu, but his whole family kind of babies him/lies to him/fools him often so he “doesn’t get involved” with mysteries/danger but wu xie wants to know so he goes on expeditions anyways (woohoo)
he’s got 2 close friends and they form the 铁三角/tie san jiao/“iron triangle” who are:
wang pang zi (胖子) who is super talkative and is wu xies best friend. hes NOT related to the 9 gates at all. he’s super talkative, complains a lot, exaggerates, and is cheesy/embarrassing but he’s fun and cares for wu xie a lot (our pang mama). sometimes he’s called pang ye by others out of respect. he likes...bombszhang qiling (张起灵) who also is called men you ping (闷油瓶, slang for poker-face, bc he doesn’t react much and barely speaks) and xiao ge (小哥, wu xie and pang zi mostly) bc hes a ZHANG, he’s super strong, very skilled, doesn’t talk much, is immortal, has special blood (qilin blood that protects him from insects), and commonly looses his memories (he’s forced to loose his memories every 10 years). he has a tattoo on his upper chest that appears whenever his body heats up, and his index + middle fingers are longer than normal which help him disable traps in tombs. all “ZHANG” family people have these characteristics, but he doesn’t remember anything about his past bc he keeps loosing his memories lol
ultimate note starts with their 4th major expedition together (the adaptation covers parts 5-8 out of 9 total) and in the beginning zhang qiling is separated from them because he went to go find “the ultimate” on his own.
OTHER MAJOR SIDE CHARACTERS YOU DON'T REALLY NEED TO KNOW BUT APPEAR
a ning: shes the super tough type and works for a white guy named cox hendry (who isn't a part of the 9 gates but he’s been around since that time. he’s very desperate to find the secret to immortality so he keeps entering tombs to find it). she met wu xie in the past and they’ve gone on multiple expeditions together (though they're not always on the same “side”)...they've kind of got a thing going onxie yuchen: also called xiao hua (花/hua as in flower)/hua ye out of respect, he's the only member left in the XIE family which is also a part of the nine gates. he's childhood friends with wu xie so they’re very close and he learned opera from er ye (a member of the mystic nine) so it’s a major part of his life. he’s very skilled and intelligent my kinghei yanjing/hei xiazi: the guy who’s always wearing sunglasses (黑眼镜/hei yan jing means black glasses) and is said to be “blind” (瞎子/xia zi means blind person). he’s been around a long time he’s probably also immortal and almost everything he does is transaction based so if you pay him he’ll go do it. he's very skilled and is obsessed with this “minced pork and green pepper fried rice” idk why… still not sure if it's an adhuo xiuxiu: a member of the HUO family. she’s xie yuchen's best friend and vice versa, and is wu xie's childhood friend. the HUO family is known for being strong females and the member of the huo family who was in the nine (xiuxiu's grandmother/huo xiangu) was also the only female memberchen wenjin: a lady who was never actually involved with the 9 but her father (CHEN pi a si) was a member. she lead many major expeditions years ago and kind of had a thing with wu xie's san shu (wu sanxing)pan zi: not a part of the 9 either. he’s a retired military man and is wu sanxing’s right hand man with his affairs. he’s very loyal to him so he’s very loyal to wu xie as well.
usually when you hear about a character and their surname sounds familiar they’re probably related to someone else you know with the same surname bc everything is pretty contained within the nine...
ok i think that’s all the background info that might be good to know! tbh u could just go into this blind and it would be fine you'd just be confused for the first few eps and the reveals would matter less…it gets better after 5 eps or so!
